Varicose veins are enlarged, bluish bulging veins that are commonly seen on your legs or feet. Although they are most commonly seen on the legs and feet, they can occur anywhere in the body. Varicose veins are also commonly seen in women during their pregnancy. Can acupuncture help get rid of Varicose veins condition?

Traditional Chinese Medicine’s take on Acupuncture

  • According to Traditional Chinese Medicine, there are two reasons associated with varicose veins. The two main causes for varicose veins are ‘pooling’ or ‘stasis’ of blood in the veins and ‘loss of muscle tone’ in the veins which prevent the blood to move from the feet below to the heart above. Usually, the vessels in the feet have walls in the interior that always move upward to facilitate the upward flow of blood. When these valves become dysfunctional this pumping gets retarded and so pooling of blood and distension occurs.
  • No single drug has been identified to strengthen these vessels.
  • In TCM spleen meridian is responsible for the volume and tone of muscles in the body. In spleen dysfunction, the valves lose their tightness and move downward too.

General Reaction to Varicose Veins

Most people with varicose veins leave it untreated till they experience swelling, discomfort or aching. In severe untreated cases, these varicose veins are prone to rupture or develop into ulcers on the skin.

Acupuncture Treatment for Varicose Veins

As mentioned earlier, the dysfunction in the spleen meridian is responsible for the pooling of blood and the reduced muscle tone causing varicose veins. Stimulating the spleen meridian for 40 minutes a day for 30 days gives excellent results. By the 45th day the popped vessels as they have shrunk, will not be visible. Acupuncture can promote the flow of blood in the veins and can break up any stagnated pool of blood. Other specific acupuncture points are also used to treat the core factor of the problem and can also strengthen the body as a whole to prevent any further problems.  Regular sessions of acupuncture can completely restore flow within the veins.
